Check for dialtone before dialing

    I am using a Digium TDM400 card to connect to existing telephone lines.   If a old standard phone is connected on the same lines, I encounter a problem.   When dialing through the pbx, the line is never checked for a dial-tone before it starts to dial, sending the dialing number into the middle of the existing phone call.   Is there any way I can detect that the line is already in use and/or check for dialtone before dialing?
